After realizing that commuting to New York City and working behind their desks in Manhattan was not for them, Shep and Ian, brothers, both quit their jobs within ten minutes of each other, ordered a couple of drinks, and clinked their glasses together and the thought of Vineyard Vines was born. They traded in their suits for bathing suits by selling ties so they wouldn’t have to wear them.
On July 3rd, 1998, Shep and Ian delivered their first batch of 800 ties that sold out within a week. A quick reorder was made, debt was clearing up and they managed to step into their new office. After more success they were moving into even bigger offices, and hiring more of their friends to help them out. Today Vineyard Vines is now opening stores across the country and don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. People have always said to love what you do and you’ll be successful, Shep and Ian are a perfect example of this.
